The project is called the SURA Participatory Governance Project and is managed by the teams of the SURA Urban Policies and Research Center.
The project brings together key organizations such as the Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality, Kocaeli Governorship, Kocaeli University, Gebze Technical University, Kocaeli Chamber of Commerce, Kocaeli Chamber of Industry, East Marmara Development Agency, Bilişim Vadisi and Kocaeli City Council under the leadership of the Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality. The SURA Urban Policies and Research Center, based on the principle of 'City's Common Mind', is established to develop sustainable strategies and model projects aligned with the 2030 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals for Kocaeli to become a city compatible with national and international branding.
The SURA Participatory Governance Project aims to facilitate the development and branding of Kocaeli City. Through collaboration among the academic community, administrative bodies, and the public, activities such as knowledge generation, processing, archiving, reporting, planning, research, project management, and organizing meetings are undertaken. The workshop and action plan process of the SURA Participatory Governance Project consists of the following steps: Policy Board Formation, Survey Research and Literature Review, SURA Planning, Workshop Planning, Focus Group Meetings, Preparation of Result Report and Action Plan Development.
In terms of communication with participants, a strong relationship and an effective communication plan have been established by incorporating a "SHARE YOUR IDEA" button on the relevant website to establish strong connections with all actors directly or indirectly associated with SURA and all segments of the public. The innovation in the project lies in advancing the policymaking process step by step while considering participants' ideas and the city's needs at every stage.
Overall, a strong stakeholder infrastructure has been established, including participants from public institutions, local government officials and representatives, universities, and civil society organizations. In conclusion, this project has strengthened the understanding of participatory governance in the region and enabled communities to play a more active role in determining public policies and services.
