Ramallah: Active Aging Initiative
Launched in 2018, Ramallah's Active Aging Initiative empowers elders. This community-driven "Forum of Expertise" (FOE) goes beyond care, fostering well-being, intergenerational connections, and collaborative action through senior-led activities. It flips the script on traditional programs, integrating local knowledge and adapting to meet evolving needs.
Ramallah's elderly population faces significant challenges, including social isolation, loss of purpose, and the stresses of living under military occupation. The initiative addresses these concerns by:
- Empowering Seniors: The FOE flips the script on traditional programs. Seniors share knowledge and skills through volunteer-led activities, fostering intergenerational exchange and leveraging the wisdom of elders.
- Combatting Isolation: The initiative prioritizes social connection. Activities, intergenerational interaction, and a focus on community foster a sense of belonging and combat isolation.
- Promoting Well-being: A range of programs address physical and mental well-being. Fitness classes, art workshops, and social gatherings create a holistic approach to healthy aging.
Seniors are actively involved in every stage:
- Needs Assessment: Their voices shaped program development from the outset.
- Elderly-led Initiatives: Forum members play a key role in choosing and leading activities based on their interests.
- Continuous Feedback: Regular surveys and discussions ensure programs remain relevant and responsive to their needs.
Measurable Impact:
The FOE has demonstrably improved the lives of over 865 Ramallah residents. A 2024 survey revealed positive impacts:
- Over 80% reported improved well-being and health.
- 90% increased physical activity levels.
- 92% developed friendships within the Forum.
Beyond Participants:
The initiative's benefits extend beyond immediate participants:
- Community Strengthening: The FOE fosters intergenerational interaction and volunteerism, enriching Ramallah's social fabric.
- Policy Influence: The initiative's success highlights the need for broader investment in social programs for older adults.
- Model for Sustainability: Overwhelmingly positive feedback and a commitment to citizen participation ensure the FOE's long-term sustainability.
The Initiative serves as a compelling example of how participatory democracy can empower elders and build a more supportive community for all. This innovative approach positions the FOE as a model for transforming elderly care within the Palestinian context.
