Province of Pastaza: Immediate Action Plan for coordination, motivation and institutional support to strengthen citizen security
“Strengthening Security and Democracy in Pastaza” is a transformative initiative designed to improve democracy, security, and peace in this Amazonian province of Ecuador. Implemented in a region rich in cultural and biological diversity, the practice has used innovative methods to address significant challenges in security and civic participation, ensuring that the benefits of sustainable development reach all sectors of society. The practice’s methodology encompassed several key stages, beginning with a situational diagnosis that identified critical points and crime analysis. This diagnosis was followed by participatory planning that included local actors such as the National Police, municipal GADs, churches and civil society, ensuring an inclusive approach. The implementation of the practice was based on specific objectives, which included the provision of resources such as vans and fuel for the police, and the launch of awareness campaigns on gender-based violence. The communication strategy played a fundamental role, using digital platforms to keep citizens informed and engaged.
The results were evaluated through monthly reports and continuous monitoring, allowing for timely and effective adjustments in the implementation of the policies. This practice has significantly improved security tools, strengthened institutional capacity, and empowered the community through civic education and active participation in governance processes. In addition, it has contributed to the consolidation of participatory democracy in the region, positively influencing public policies and improving the interaction between the government and citizens. Nominated in the category “Building more democratic and peaceful communities”, this initiative stands out for its holistic and participatory approach, aligned with Sustainable Development Goals 11, 16 and 17. The practice not only responds to the immediate needs of security and development in Pastaza, but also lays the foundations for a more inclusive, secure and resilient future for all communities in the province.
