2025 Award "Best Practice in Citizen Participation"
19th Edition
São Paulo: Virada ODS
According to the UN, Virada ODS is the largest municipal public policy aimed at civic engagement towards the Sustainable Development Goals. Over the three days of the event, residents have multiple opportunities to engage with the 2030 Agenda through practical activities, service provision, workshops, and lectures, bringing together the public, civil, and private sectors for this purpose. However, Virada ODS is not limited to the days of the event, as it includes continuous actions throughout the year, aiming for ongoing education and communication with the public.
In 2024, we conducted training for public servants on the SDG Agenda, released various episodes of a dedicated podcast discussing sexual diversity, sustainability, and civic participation, among other topics. Additionally, we held smaller events such as BiomaSP, Descarte, and Global Action Day ODS, all focused on spreading sustainable practices and engaging in discussions about sustainability in the municipality.
In the same year, Virada ODS began the process of dissemination to other cities, aiming for its internationalization as a model policy for knowledge sharing and education based on the 2030 Agenda objectives. We offered support and training for other cities interested in replicating this policy in their territories, which led to the creation of Virada ODS in the cities of Maringá (PR) and Mairiporã (SP). Participation in events across Latin America and the Caribbean is on the project’s 2025 agenda as a means of spreading Virada ODS throughout the region, internationally. Moreover, internationalization allows for the prospecting of exemplary practices from other municipalities, which can be incorporated or showcased at São Paulo's Virada ODS, further strengthening cooperation ties between cities.
