2025 Award "Best Practice in Citizen Participation"
19th Edition
Casablanca: Project for developing eco-friendly cooling technologies in urban areas
The practice "Sustainable Agriculture Improvement in the Ibn Suleiman Region" consists of an initiative aimed at enhancing climate change resilience through the application of smart and sustainable farming techniques. The project began in 2010 and involved over 500 farmers and families in rural areas of the Ibn Suleiman region. Participants were trained in smart irrigation techniques, improved farming, and innovative solutions to reduce water consumption and increase productivity.
The goal of the practice was to improve food security and enhance the resilience of local communities against environmental challenges. Key mechanisms of the practice included engaging the local community in all stages of the project, from designing solutions to implementation and evaluation. Multiple communication channels, such as community workshops, surveys, and social media, were used to ensure effective participation. Partnerships with local authorities were also developed to ensure the sustainability of the applied solutions.
The practice also contributed to promoting participatory democracy by involving citizens in decision-making processes. At the government level, the practice helped promote sustainable agricultural policies in the region, leading to the adoption of new policies that support smart agriculture and innovation. Through educational and awareness strategies, public awareness on the importance of sustainable environmental solutions was raised. Coordination between various local authorities and administrative departments was also improved.
The impacts of the practice included improved quality of life for the target communities and a 30% increase in agricultural productivity. Resource use was also improved sustainably, with a 25% reduction in water consumption. Additionally, the initiative helped build the capacity of local governance, promoting community participation and ensuring the sustainability of solutions post-project.
