Çanakkale: A Participatory and Inclusive Climate Action Model: Çanakkale Climate Action Group and Climate Ambassadors

Avatar: Official proposal Official proposal

“A Participatory and Inclusive Climate Action Model: Çanakkale Climate Action Group and Climate Ambassadors" consisted of an innovative initiative to empower citizens and civil society in implementing and monitoring the Climate Action Plan in Çanakkale. Launched on January 1, 2025, as a European project with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and in partnership with the Turkish European Foundation and Çanakkale Municipality, responsibilities were strategically shared, with partners providing mutual financial, technical, and operational support.

The practice engaged public institutions, municipal departments, civil society organizations, and citizens through workshops, consultation meetings, training, and interactive events. More than 200 stakeholders actively contributed, and 49 volunteers were certified as "Climate Ambassadors," forming a permanent network bridging citizens and local administration, enhancing awareness, local ownership, and sustainable climate action.

Coordination was reinforced through biweekly meetings, systematic reporting, and integration with municipal consultation mechanisms and community feedback platforms. The model prioritized inclusivity, gender balance, accessibility, and participatory governance.

Feedback from citizens and stakeholders was continuously collected and used to refine methodologies, ensure transparency, and strengthen accountability. The practice also aligned with cross-cutting policies on sustainability, climate action, and waste management, linking local initiatives to broader participatory and governance frameworks.

Even after the project's official completion on January 1, 2026, the Climate Ambassadors network continues to operate, promoting long-term citizen engagement, inter-institutional collaboration, and adaptability to evolving local needs. By fostering collective problem-solving, shared responsibility, and active participation, the initiative institutionalizes participatory democracy in Çanakkale and strengthens the community's ownership and sustainability of local climate policies.

Through this initiative, over 200 stakeholders actively engaged, demonstrating the model's reach and impact within the community.
