Yerba Buena: Yerba Buena Living Identity – Citizen Co-creation of Public Space
Yerba Buena Living Identity is a project promoted by the Municipality of Yerba Buena that encourages citizen participation in the construction of public space through artistic co-creation processes. The initiative uses participatory muralism as a tool to create spaces for community encounters, recover local memories, and strengthen the sense of belonging in a city that has experienced significant urban growth in recent decades.
The initiative is developed through artistic interventions in parks, neighbourhoods, schools, and other public spaces. Each intervention begins with participatory meetings where residents, students, and local organizations share stories, identities, and cultural references linked to the territory. Based on these exchanges, local artists develop visual proposals that are later materialized as collective murals.
During the execution of the works, open community sessions are organized in which residents actively participate in painting activities and accompany the creative process. In this way, the mural becomes the visible result of a process of citizen participation in public space.
Since its creation, the local government has promoted more than a dozen interventions that progressively form an open-air museum integrated into the urban landscape of the city.
Through this process, the initiative strengthens community ownership of public space, promotes intergenerational dialogue, and consolidates new forms of citizen participation in the cultural and urban life of Yerba Buena.
