Isfahan: Isfahan Handicrafts Passage

Avatar: Official proposal Official proposal

The Isfahan Handicrafts Passage consisted of transforming a underutilized pedestrian corridor in Shahid Rajaee Park into a vibrant, living gallery and educational hub dedicated to traditional Iranian crafts, reinforcing our position as a UNESCO Creative City.

The initiative transcends conventional exhibition formats by reimagining crafts - such as the globally recognized Minakari and Ghalamzani - not as static museum artifacts, but as dynamic engines of community identity, social innovation, and sustainable economic growth. It hosts weekly events annually across provincial disciplines, featuring live demonstrations, hands-on educational workshops, and crucial intergenerational knowledge transfer.

Grounded in the "3T" framework (Talent, Technique, Tolerance), the practice has successfully engaged hundreds of local artisans and thousands of citizens and tourists. It actively bridges the generational gap by empowering youth and female artisans, thereby catalyzing local entrepreneurship. The project's core innovation lies in its horizontal governance model, seamlessly merging urban design with the creative economy through a multi-stakeholder ecosystem involving the municipality, universities, craft guilds, and the private sector.

Implementing this initiative generated critical insights for participatory urban management. Firstly, we learned that co-creation guarantees sustainability; involving artisans and youth from the earliest design stages cultivated profound civic ownership. Secondly, spatial flexibility proved essential, prompting the use of modular pavilions to adapt to climatic and social shifts. Thirdly, intersectoral collaboration successfully dismantled institutional silos, demonstrating that shared ownership enhances political legitimacy. Finally, through continuous citizen feedback loops, we transitioned from a fixed-event model to an adaptive "learning city" approach.

Ultimately, the Handicrafts Passage serves as a scalable, living urban diplomacy tool. It proves how creativity-driven placemaking can empower communities, regenerate public spaces, and foster intercultural dialogue worldwide
