Nablus: Diwan Community Garden

Avatar: Official proposal Official proposal

Al-Diwan Community Garden involved the transformation of an existing public space in Nablus into a safe, inclusive, and accessible community garden that addresses the needs of diverse population groups, including women, youth, elderly people, and persons with disabilities. The practice was implemented through the Shared Life Programme, funded by Municipality and Government of Canada and Municipal Development Lend Fund  in partnership with UN- Habitat and the Ministry of Local Government.

The practice followed a participatory, community-centered methodology. Residents were engaged in focus group discussions and structured design sessions throughout all phases, This feedback directly informed the design, ensuring it reflected community priorities and promoted social cohesion, gender equality, and inclusion of people with disabilities.

The garden's design includes wheelchair-accessible entrances and walking trails, fitness equipment, seating areas for social gatherings, spaces for games and mental activities, urban gardening patches, and a reading corner. Traditional Palestinian design elements, such as locally made colored tiles, a central water fountain, and native greenery, create a welcoming and familiar environment that encourages extended use and interaction.

The practice ensured accountability and transparency throughout all stakeholders with regular meetings, shared progress reports, and public access to project information, allowing citizens and partners to monitor developments and provide feedback at every stage. Follow-up and sustainability are maintained via ongoing maintenance plans, field monitoring, and integration of feedback for future improvements.

Moreover, practice had broad impacts: socially, it strengthened community interaction and provided safe spaces for all; environmentally, it increased accessible green space and contributed to climate adaptation; economically, it attracted visitors and supported surrounding businesses; and institutionally, it enhanced participatory planning within Nablus Municipality and embedded citizen engagement as a standard practice in urban development.
