Niğde: Participatory City Model: Citizen Participation in Local Governance in Niğde
Through the practice, we have achieved stronger communication and collaboration between citizens and the municipality in Niğde. The Participatory City Model created new opportunities for residents to express their ideas, identify local priorities, and contribute to municipal decision-making processes. Through participatory meetings and workshops organized across the city, hundreds of residents, representatives of civil society organizations, youth groups, women's initiatives, and neighborhood communities were directly involved in discussions about urban services, social policies, and local development.
The initiative helped increase transparency and trust between citizens and the municipal administration by ensuring that proposals and suggestions were documented, evaluated, and integrated into planning processes when feasible. The practice also improved the functioning of municipal departments by encouraging more open communication with stakeholders and incorporating citizen feedback into policy development.
As a result, the initiative contributed to strengthening participatory governance in Niğde and laid the foundation for the institutionalization of citizen participation mechanisms within the municipality. The experience has encouraged the municipality to continue developing participatory tools and to integrate citizen engagement more systematically into future planning and policy processes.
