Nigeria: YouthGovTracka

Avatar: Official proposal Official proposal

YouthGovTracka consisted of a civic technology and grassroots initiative launched in 2023 by the Brain Builders Youth Development Initiative to strengthen democratic accountability in Nigeria. It emerged to address the persistent gap between governors' campaign promises and their fulfilment, which has fuelled political apathy and distrust. The practice combined a digital platform that tracks commitments across Nigeria's 36 states with offline mechanisms such as town halls, debates, and oratory contests.

Youth and women were central beneficiaries, with 50% female representation among Youth Focal Points. Persons with disabilities, including the deaf, were also mobilised to ensure inclusivity. Communication strategies blended social media campaigns, radio jingles, multilingual toolkits, and television appearances, reaching over 27 million people and directly engaging more than 5,000 citizens.

Partnerships with 79 youth-focused organisations, 49 government officials, and media outlets have created a strong ecosystem. Evaluation was conducted through digital analytics, grassroots feedback, and open reporting to donors, ensuring transparency. The impacts included improved responsiveness from public officials, strengthened civic participation, and institutionalised participatory democracy through state-level Youth Focal Points.

Although YouthGovTracka is coordinated nationally by the Brain Builders Youth Development Initiative, its implementation relies strongly on partnerships with local and regional governments. Local councils have co-organized town halls and accountability forums with Youth Focal Points, while ministries such as Information, Youth and Sports, and Budget/Planning have integrated the initiative into civic education and transparency programs. The project has received support from governors and local officials, and has engaged 49 government representatives—including commissioners and assembly members—ensuring that citizen feedback reaches decision-makers. By aligning with existing participatory budgeting and consultation mechanisms, YouthGovTracka strengthens transparency, inclusion, and accountability, while its collaboration with councils, ministries, and municipal leaders ensures territorial reach, legitimacy, and sustainability.
