Nilüfer: Data-Driven Agriculture: Nilüfer Agricultural Analysis Laboratory

Data-Driven Agriculture: Nilüfer Agricultural Analysis Laboratory consists of establishing a scientific and participatory system to support sustainable agriculture and protect soil and water resources in Nilüfer, a district of Bursa where agricultural land still represents a significant part of the territory despite rapid urbanization. The initiative was developed by Nilüfer Municipality in collaboration with the Nilüfer Agricultural Development Cooperative (NİLKOOP) to address environmental challenges caused by unsustainable fertilization practices, lack of accessible scientific data for farmers, and increasing pressures on natural resources.

The laboratory, established in 2023 and accredited under the TS EN ISO/IEC 17025 standard in 2025, provides reliable analyses of soil, plant, irrigation water, and agricultural materials. Through these analyses, farmers gain access to scientific information that supports data-driven agricultural decisions, promotes responsible fertilization practices, and contributes to the protection of soil health and water quality.

The practice is based on collaboration between the municipality, the producer cooperative, and local farmers. Farmers actively participate by providing samples, receiving analysis results, and engaging in meetings and training activities where experts share recommendations on sustainable farming practices. This participatory approach allows scientific data generated by the laboratory to directly inform agricultural practices in the territory.

Between 2023 and 2026, the laboratory carried out more than 4,500 analyses, contributing to better understanding of soil fertility, nutrient management, and irrigation water quality in the district. The initiative also supported the development of a Nilüfer Agricultural Inventory, which helps map agricultural production areas and strengthens evidence-based environmental policies.

By integrating laboratory analysis, farmer participation, and municipal environmental policies, the initiative has created a local model for data-driven and participatory environmental management. The practice strengthens sustainable agriculture, supports rural livelihoods, and contributes to the ecological transition by promoting responsible production and consumption and protecting natural resources.
