North Central Nigeria: Her Voice in Governance - Amplifying Women's Civic Engagement and Leadership

Avatar: Official proposal Official proposal

Her Voice in Governance consisted of a participatory civic engagement and capacity-building initiative designed to strengthen women's leadership, inclusion, and voice in governance processes across North Central Nigeria. Implemented by Edge Hope Builders for Youth and Women Initiative (EHYWI), the practice responded to persistent gender gaps in civic participation, limited access to governance information, and low representation of women and young women in decision-making spaces within the territory.

The practice combined capacity training, peer-led step-down trainings, and digital and community-based advocacy to empower women fellows with knowledge, skills, and confidence to engage meaningfully in governance. A structured training programme, delivered across five Saturdays, focused on civic rights, accountability, leadership, policy engagement, and the use of digital tools for advocacy. Trained fellows subsequently conducted step-down trainings within their communities, ensuring knowledge transfer and wider reach beyond the initial cohort.

To amplify impact, the practice integrated social media and offline campaigns that elevated women's voices, promoted civic dialogue, and encouraged broader community participation. Community leaders, youth groups, women's associations, civil society actors, and media partners were actively engaged to ensure local ownership, cultural relevance, and sustainability. The methodology emphasized inclusivity, participatory learning, and context-specific approaches tailored to the sociocultural realities of North Central Nigeria.

The initiative engaged with local authorities through collaboration and community-level engagement. Specifically, it worked with local government stakeholders on advocacy, community dialogues, and program implementation focused on amplifying women’s voices in governance and decision-making processes. These engagements included partnerships, stakeholder consultations, and recognition of the initiative’s work at the local level, contributing to inclusive governance and gender-responsive participation.

Through the practice, women and young people gained improved civic awareness, increased confidence to engage public institutions, and practical tools to demand accountability. Stakeholders reported stronger collaboration between communities and civil society, increased visibility of women's issues in public discourse, and growing acceptance of women's leadership at the local level. Her Voice in Governance contributes to the long-term strengthening of participatory democracy in the territory by institutionalizing peer learning, fostering community accountability structures, and embedding gender-responsive civic engagement into local governance conversations.
