Santiago del Estero: TransformAcción Ambiental – Youth, Art, and Community Action to Restore Urban Spaces

Avatar: Official proposal Official proposal

TransformAcción Ambiental is an initiative promoted by the Youth Directorate of the Municipality of the Capital City of Santiago del Estero, Argentina, which encourages the participation of young people, residents, and institutions in the recovery of degraded urban spaces affected by the presence of illegal micro-dumps.

The initiative emerged in response to environmental challenges affecting different neighbourhoods of the city, particularly those related to informal waste disposal and the deterioration of public spaces. To address these issues, the program promotes an intervention strategy that combines community action, environmental education, and urban art as tools for social transformation.

Through participatory activities carried out in local communities, young people, students, residents, civil society organizations, and municipal teams work together on cleaning tasks, waste removal, tree planting, and the creation of murals with environmental awareness messages. These interventions help restore degraded spaces while also raising awareness about environmental protection and the care of public spaces.

The activities are implemented through coordination among different municipal departments, including the Youth Directorate, the Subsecretariat for the Environment, Urban Services, the Directorate of Electricity, and the Urban Forestry Department. Educational institutions, social organizations, and residents of the neighbourhoods where the activities take place also participate.

So far, interventions have been carried out in neighbourhoods such as La Católica and 8 de Abril, with approximately 50 participants taking part in each activity. The initiatives also receive logistical support from provincial institutions, such as the Subsecretariat for the Environment of the Provincial Government.

The initiative seeks to transform a common environmental problem into an opportunity for citizen participation, strengthening community commitment to environmental care and promoting joint work between local government and the community to improve public spaces.
