San Juan de Lurigancho: Campaigns for road safety education and awareness
The experience in the district of San Juan de Lurigancho (SJL) in Lima, Peru has been very complex since, unlike other districts, in SJL one does not know about road education campaigns and with respect to the pedestrian, that is why, to be for the first time, it was possible to observe that they are very necessary.
San Juan de Lurigancho is located in an extensive valley surrounded by slopes where there are several human settlements, as well as chaotic transport due to the lack of formality, which has led to a lack of road education and respect for traffic rules and, therefore, of ciudadanos values. This factor, among others, explains why accidents constantly occur at the main road crosses and intersections in the locality.
The objective of our road awareness and education campaign seeks to reverse and help raise awareness among the population to respect and prioritize respect for the pedestrian, the cyclist and the BICYCLES, encouraging values.
There have been no previous campaigns on road education and awareness in transport and its various modalities in our district. It is for this reason that the objective is to promote civic values and promote respect for traffic rules
We have identified and visited the points of greatest conflict where the CYCLE PATHS, public transport and pedestrians converge.
With the novelty of including participation and motivation towards citizenship, dialogue and involvement in the activities that take place. Generating a change in the conscience and character of the drivers of public and private transport vehicles towards the pedestrian and cyclist, especially for children, young people, adults and adults who are older about the importance of respect.
We have used the following logistics (cart, pallets and muñecos) to show the vehicles in the red traffic light waiting times. The campaign takes place at peak hour for 2 hours from 07:00am to 09:00am.
The Innovator in our awareness campaigns is the participation and motivation towards ciudadanía and the inclusion of organizations such as the (ATU) Autoridad de Transporte Urbano de Lima and Callao, the National Traffic Police and the Municipality of Lima asi as organizations of character in the governmental NGO.
The strategy used is the participation of allegorical and showy characters such as pampering, traffic light muñecos and cell phone muñecos. The show that signals to us that there is a good participation of the citizenry is accepting to take photos with the letters and with the messages “I respect the pedestrian”, “I respect the cycle path”, “I respect the traffic signals”.
The impact has been positive on the part of cyclists because we are recovering the mobility space.
In addition, a count of the number of cyclists who transit through the cycle path between 7:30am and 9:30am has been carried out, and we have been able to show that the flow of cyclists is increasing.
In conclusion, citizen perception is increasingly favorable and supports our work that we continue to carry out every martes and jueves.
