Rosário da Limeira: Democracy Initiation Programme
The Democracy Initiation Programme (PROID) is an innovative educational initiative that aims to train a new generation of citizens who are aware of and committed to democracy and human rights. One of its most striking features is the simulation of the electoral process, where students have the unique opportunity to stand as candidates for the Presidency of the Republic of Brazil.
Over the course of approximately 4 months, the students take part in a series of meetings where they discuss relevant topics such as the rights and duties of citizens, the functioning of the executive, legislative and judicial branches, as well as issues related to political parties and the electoral process.
One of the highlights of the programme is the opportunity for students to create their own political parties. Divided into groups, they develop logos, choose numbers and colours to represent their ideas and draw up proposals for the real challenges facing Brazil.
The culmination of PROID is the election, where all the students from the participating schools exercise their right to vote. The candidates for president present their proposals in a democratic and respectful environment, and voters have the opportunity to choose the one they feel is best suited to represent them. The election is conducted in a transparent and democratic manner, reflecting the core values of the programme.
In addition to the electoral simulation, PROID offers a series of other activities that enrich the students' experience. The meetings address topics such as the importance of political participation, ethics in public life and the importance of diversity and inclusion in society. These themes are explored through interactive dynamics, debates and practical activities, providing students with a comprehensive and multifaceted understanding of the political universe.
At the end of the programme, the presidential sash is passed on, a symbolic moment that marks the end of PROID. This ceremony not only celebrates the students' commitment and dedication, but also prepares them to take on leadership roles in their communities and to make a significant contribution to building a fairer, more democratic society.
In short, PROID is much more than an educational programme; it is a unique opportunity for students to develop essential skills, understand how democracy works in practice and become agents of change in their communities.
