Zaio-Nador: Nexans-Zaio project
The Second Chance Centre in the municipality of Zaio has enabled young people who have failed to complete their studies to reintegrate into the socio-educational world through vocational training in various sectors. In terms of education, Zaio is faced with problems of school drop-out, exposing many adolescents and young people to unemployment and the dangers of the street. To remedy this situation, the Ministry of Education has set up a Second Chance Centre to reintegrate these young people into socio-educational life. Each year, between 150 and 250 pupils aged between 14 and 19 benefit from the centre's activities, which offer training in five different trades: mechanics, pastry-making, agriculture and renewable energy. Girls account for almost 50% of the beneficiaries each year. The results are encouraging, with several beneficiaries having already found jobs in the private sector.
The general objective is to integrate young people and adolescents who have dropped out of school into socio-educational life through vocational training.
The specific objectives are
- Vocational training for beneficiaries in various sectors (mechanics, pastry-making, etc.)
- Psychological and educational support for beneficiaries
- Entrepreneurial training and support
We currently have a number of partners involved in this project:
- The Ministry of Education: main partner
- UNICEF, which has supported the agricultural sector by providing equipment and training for trainers and pupils
- The Nexans Foundation, which financed the solar energy workshop
- The commune of Zaio: logistical support
The results are encouraging: some girls have chosen mechanical engineering, others agriculture and renewable energy. Similarly, some young people have found jobs in their field, while others have been able to return to state schools to continue their studies.
This centre has helped to reduce teenage delinquency on the streets, and has also reduced the rate of immigration of young people to our town.
