Province of Manabí: Construction of a technified irrigation system

The construction of the irrigation system in La Pipona has achieved a series of significant results that have had a positive impact on the community, strengthening its economy, improving water management and promoting sustainable development. This project has been the result of the collaboration and joint effort of various actors, including local authorities, community organisations, specialised technicians and local farmers.

The implementation of the irrigation system has significantly increased the productive areas in the community. With the implementation of irrigation on 480 hectares of land, an 85% increase in agricultural productivity has been achieved in the first year of operation of the system. This increase in agricultural production has contributed to diversifying the supply of crops in La Pipona, reducing dependence on seasonal crops and improving the food security of the community.

The success of this project has been possible thanks to the joint work of various actors, including the Autonomous Decentralised Government of Rocafuerte, the La Pipona Irrigation Board, agronomists and hydraulic engineers, and irrigation equipment suppliers. Each stakeholder was instrumental in the planning, design, implementation and maintenance of the irrigation system, contributing knowledge, resources and experience to the success of the project.

With the implementation of the irrigation schedule and the efficient distribution of water to 85% of each plot, water use has been optimised, avoiding waste and ensuring a constant supply for the crops. This optimises agricultural planning, increases resource efficiency and cuts production costs for farmers.

The project has strengthened the La Pipona Irrigation Board by 90%, improving its management capacity and decision-making on water and natural resources, which is key to the sustainability of the irrigation system and equitable water management.

The implementation of environmentally friendly agrochemical management has also had a positive impact on the environmental health of the community. By promoting the responsible use of agrochemicals and sustainable agricultural practices, soil and water pollution has been reduced, thus protecting natural resources and local biodiversity. This contributes to the preservation of the environment and the long-term sustainable development of La Pipona.
