Province of Salta: Building the Council We Want
"Building the Council We Want" is a project developed by the Secretariat of Citizen Participation and Community Relations, selected by the Federal Open Government Program. Its main objective is to design and implement an Action Plan to transform the San Antonio de los Cobres Deliberative Council into an open and participatory space, where citizens can not only access relevant information transparently but also actively participate in the local legislative process.
San Antonio de los Cobres is a town in the Puna region of the province of Salta, the capital of the Los Andes department, located in the southwest of the province of Salta and the northwest of Argentina, at an altitude of approximately 3,775 meters above sea level. The town has a relatively small population, with around 5,814 inhabitants according to recent data.
Local governments are the closest form of governance to citizens, and municipalities are where public policies have the most direct impact on the lives of citizens. Recognizing this transformative potential, the plan proposes to build an Action Plan from scratch to turn the San Antonio de los Cobres Deliberative Council into a model of Open Parliament. This is a pioneering initiative in the province of Salta, as it is the first council to take on the challenge of designing and implementing an integrated legislative openness strategy, setting a new standard for the region.
In a territory like San Antonio de los Cobres, where the voices of the people have historically been marginalized, this process becomes a unique opportunity for citizens to take control of their future, contribute with ideas, and engage in decisions that affect them. This change not only promotes greater transparency but also seeks to ignite the spark of active, empowered, and conscious participation, creating a deep bond between institutions and the community that can forge a shared and fairer future.
