2025 Award "Best Practice in Citizen Participation"
19th Edition
Azilal province: Umm El Benin Association for Women and Children's Rights
The Umm Al-Baneen Association, located in Azilal Province within the Beni Mellal-Khenifra region of Morocco, has been implementing a participatory democracy approach since 2017. The association focuses on involving local citizens, including youth and women, in the decision-making process for local development. It aims to empower residents with the skills to submit petitions, defend their rights, and engage in income-generating projects, improving their livelihoods and contributing to social and environmental well-being. The province, known for its mountainous terrain and significant tourist sites like Azoud Falls, relies heavily on agriculture and has a population of 50,450 people.
The association uses participatory methods, including community meetings, needs assessments, and communication with local authorities to advocate for the community's needs and provide suggestions for development. Through training in participatory democracy and human rights, the association has helped form 40 local associations in the region, promoting a culture of democratic engagement and gender equality.
The association’s communication strategy involves engaging residents through field studies, influencers, and social media to deliver information and listen to their concerns. The impact of their work includes fostering democratic values, promoting citizen involvement in local governance, and addressing marginalized groups' issues. The ultimate goal is to create sustainable development in the region, with a focus on social inclusion, economic participation, and environmental protection.
