Province of Cotopaxi: Caring for the Paramos, Protecting the Water: A Path towards Ecological Transition in Cotopaxi
Caring for the Paramos, Protecting the Water: A Path to Ecological Transition in Cotopaxi, an innovative project that sought to strengthen the sustainable production of mortiño wine, a product originating in the Cotopaxi paramos. This effort has not only boosted the local economy by creating direct and indirect jobs, but has also promoted the conservation of ecosystems and water resources that are vital for the communities.
Through the Quinticusig Association of Agricultural Producers and Marketers, more than 100 families have benefited directly and indirectly, generating income, empowering women and the elderly, and ensuring the economic sustainability of the community.
The project has focused on protecting the environment, recovering the moorlands and improving quality of life, with a comprehensive approach that combines conservation with local economic development. It has fostered associative work, strengthened local capacities and promoted ecological tourism as a sustainable alternative. Furthermore, it has aligned its objectives with regional and national policies, showing how the integration of the community in decision-making can generate concrete and lasting results.
Throughout its implementation, challenges have been overcome, production targets have been met and significant progress has been made in improving infrastructure, increasing the efficiency and profitability of the project. The commitment to the environment, social equity and economic development has made it possible for this project to become a model of sustainability and citizen participation.
This project is proof of how community action, a focus on conservation and productive development can converge to create innovative solutions that benefit both the environment and people. The success of this practice demonstrates the transformative potential of communities when they work hand in hand with public policies and productive sectors in the construction of a more just and sustainable future.
