San Salvador Centro: Revitalisation of the Historic Centre: Dialogue and negotiation for the dignity of traders in public spaces
The revitalisation of the Historic Centre of San Salvador, with its main component of dialogue and negotiation for the dignification of traders in the public space and their incorporation into the municipal market system, is an example of how the participation of civil society guarantees the success of a development project.
The active participation of civil society, through the assemblies with traders, has been crucial to the success of the revitalisation process of the Historic Centre. These meetings have allowed us to learn about their needs and concerns, ensuring a fair and dignified transition towards their incorporation into the municipal market system.
Dignifying the traders in the public space has been essential to improving their quality of life and fostering their contribution to the economic development of the community. By providing a safe, comfortable, clean and orderly place for them to operate legally, it promotes their social inclusion and reduces economic inequalities in the area.
The revitalisation of the Historic Centre not only seeks to bring order to informal commerce, but also to recover its streets and pavements to give them back to the population, facilitating their mobility and promoting tourism.
By involving traders in this process, a shared vision of a more attractive and prosperous urban environment is promoted. Furthermore, by making the Historic Centre the second national tourist destination in El Salvador, it stimulates economic growth in the area and generates opportunities for employment in the tourism sector.
The positive appropriation of the recovered public space by the population is fundamental to guarantee its long-term sustainability. This implies creating an environment of order and security that encourages the use and enjoyment of reclaimed public spaces by residents and visitors alike.
The participation of civil society in this process ensures that decisions made by the municipality reflect the needs and aspirations of the community, thus strengthening the sense of ownership and shared responsibility for public space.
In summary, the participation of traders in this process, through the meetings and assemblies promoted by the Municipality, has been essential to achieve a successful revitalisation of the historic centre of San Salvador, dignify traders, order informal commerce, and promote tourism.
